Canadian-born Michael Unger was awarded First Prize in the Sixth International Organ Competition Musashino-Tokyo, Japan in 2008, a prize which included the Yoshida Minoru Memorial Award, Toyota Mayor’s Award and Tokorozawa MUSE Award. Earlier that year he won First and Audience Prize in the American Guild of Organists’ National Young Artists Competition (NYACOP), and in 2009 he won Second and Audience Prize in the Eighth International Schnitger Organ Competition on the historic organs of Alkmaar, The Netherlands, the first North American prize-winner in its history. He is also the recipient of top Canadian awards for organ studies—the 2007 Lilian Forsyth and Godfrey Hewitt Scholarships. Unger is a Gold Medal graduate of the University of Western Ontario. Following undergraduate studies, he completed masters’ degrees in organ and harpsichord at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, as a student and teaching assistant of David Higgs and William Porter. He performs extensively, and is also a church musician, chamber musician and published composer.
