Born in Munich, bass-baritone Matthias Winckhler began his musical training at the Bayerische Singakademie, and went on to study at Mozarteum University Salzburg. He also participated in masterclasses with Matthias Goerne and Markus Hinterhäuser, among others.

From 2015 to 2018 he appeared regularly as an ensemble soloist at the Staatsoper Hannover. Winckhler makes regular appearances with conductors including Ralf Otto, Vasily Petrenko and Masaaki Suzuki. He has appeared with orchestras such as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Vienna Philharmonic, Bach Collegium Japan and the Oslo Philharmonic. Guest concert appearances have led him to perform at a number of renowned festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, Kissingen Sommer and Bachfest Leipzig.

The Lied genre is another one of Winckhler’s strengths as a performer, and he gives frequent vocal recitals with pianists Marcelo Amaral, Bernadette Bartos, Tobias Krampen, Verena Metzger and Jan-Philip Schulze. In contemporary music he has worked with composers such as Nikolaus Brass, Friedrich Cerha, Manfred Trojahn and Gerhard Wimberger, including giving a number of world premiere performances.
