Matthew Truscott, violin
Richard Lester, cello
Simon Crawford-Phillips, piano

The Bartolozzi Trio was formed to perform Haydn’s extraordinary but predominantly unknown piano trios. Hoboken’s catalogue XV (which relates to the trios) is a gold mine of invention charting the piano trio’s rise to the main stage of Viennese music. Whilst the Bartolozzi Trio nods respectfully to the now considerable knowledge of period practice its concern is focussed more on the rhetoric of the music than any specific performance paradigm.

Matthew Truscott shares his time between period instrument performance and ‘modern’ chamber music, appearing with some of the finest musicians in both fields, in both chamber and orchestral music. One of the leaders of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, he has also appeared as concertmaster with The English Concert, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, The King’s Consort and Le Concert d’Astrée.

Leading chamber musician, solo-cellist and member of the much-acclaimed Florestan Trio, Richard Lester appears regularly at the world’s foremost concert venues and festivals. Equally at home on both period instruments and ‘modern’ he is principal cello with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and previously held the same position with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He now plays with the London Haydn Quartet.

Simon Crawford-Phillips has pursued a musical life combining the rôles of soloist, chamber musician, song accompanist, teacher and lecturer. Most recently this has also embraced conducting and he recently made his début with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. His career has included concerts in America, Singapore and throughout Europe with artists such as Anne Sofie von Otter, Daniel Hope, Truls Mørk, Lawrence Power and the Kungsbacka Piano Trio.
