The Hungarian-born composer Paul Abraham moved from more serious composition to the writing and conducting of operetta. His first such work, in 1930, was Viktoria und ihr Husar (Victoria and her Hussar), and he enjoyed further success until the assumption of power by Hitler forced him to leave Germany, and then Austria.
