Charlie Christopher Parker Jnr. was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on 29th August, 1920. After his parents’ separation in 1927 he was effective ly cut off from his father Charles after moving with Addie, his mother, to Kansas City, Missouri. But this was the heyday of black jazz and , inspired by his idols Count Basie and Lester Young, the youthful Charlie soon found his life’s interest in music. At Lincoln High School he first played baritone sax and became a member of its marching band which was led by Alonzo Lewis. In 1933, he joined Lawrence Keyes’ ‘Deans of Swing’ and, switching to alto when he was fifteen, in 1935, played in local bands until he left school, already intent on a professional career in jazz.
