Vittorio Monti studied composition at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples under the guidance of Paolo Serrao. He wrote Csárdás in 1904, after moving to Paris, and it quickly became his most famous piece, entering the repertoire of all gypsy instrumental ensembles.
