Tarquinio Merula was an organist and composer active not only in Italy but also outside the country’s borders (in Poland). In 1631 he became chapel master in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo; later he worked in Venice and in Cremona, where he died. His organ and harpsichord output has largely been lost.
