Pulitzer Prize and three-time GRAMMY Award-winner Jennifer Higdon has become a major figure in contemporary classical music. She was most recently awarded the prestigious Nemmers Prize in Music Composition from Northwestern University. Her works represent a wide range of genres, from orchestral and chamber to wind ensemble, as well as vocal, choral and opera.
Higdon’s list of commissioners is extensive and includes The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra. She has also written works for such artists as baritone Thomas Hampson, pianists Yuja Wang and Gary Graffman and violinists Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Jennifer Koh and Hilary Hahn.
Higdon’s first opera, Cold Mountain, won the prestigious International Opera Award for Best World Premiere in 2016. In 2010 she received the Pulitzer Prize in Music for her Violin Concerto, and she has also received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, the Pew Fellowship in the Arts, The Independence Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and ASCAP.
Higdon has been a featured composer at many festivals, and during the 2016–17 and 2017–18 academic years Higdon served as the Barr Institute Laureate Scholar at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Higdon enjoys more than 200 performances a year, and her works have been recorded on more than 70 albums. Two books have recently been written about Higdon’s music, one focusing on her choral works and one focusing on her orchestral works.
Higdon studied at Bowling Green State University, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the University of Pennsylvania. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from The Hartt School and Bowling Green State University. She has been given prestigious membership into the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
