Born in the south of Germany, Hanno Müller-Brachmann began his musical training in Basel and Freiburg. He attended Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s Lied classes in Berlin and continued his studies with Rudolf Piernay.

Following his success in several international competitions, Hanno Müller-Brachmann has performed in concert halls throughout Europe and Japan, collaborating with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, Herbert Blomstedt, Michael Boder, Frans Brüggen, Pierre Boulez, Riccardo Chailly, Myung-Whun Chung, Marcus Creed, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Michael Gielen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Philippe Herreweghe, Heinz Holliger, Philippe Jordan, Fabio Luisi, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Helmuth Rilling, Donald Runnicles, András Schiff, Peter Schreier, Bruno Weil, and Simone Young. He performed an extensive concert repertoire such as Bach’s St Matthew- and St John-Passion, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Berlioz’ Romeo et Juliette, Brahms’ Requiem, Britten’s War Requiem, Carter’s What next, Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Kindertotenlieder, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Schönberg’s Ein Überlebender aus Warschau with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Berliner Philharmoniker, Radio Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, English Baroque Soloists, European Union Youth Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in London, Milano, Paris, New York’s Carnegie-Hall and the festivals of Aldeburgh, Dresden, Flandern, Granada, London Proms, and Salzburg.

Since 1998 Hanno Müller-Brachmann is a member of the Berlin State Opera’s ensemble, where his repertoire includes Mozart’s Figaro, Guglielmo, Leporello, and Papageno, as well as Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande, Orest in Elektra, Graf in Der ferne Klang, Tomsky in The Queen of Spades, Escamillo in Carmen, and Amfortas in Parsifal. He also performed at the opera houses in Basel, Madrid, Paris, San Francisco, the Bavarian State Opera (where he made his début as Minister in Fidelio under the baton of Zubin Mehta in 1999, and in 2004/2005 performed his acclaimed Papageno), and the Vienna State Opera.

In addition to opera and oratorio, Hanno Müller-Brachmann is a devoted Lieder singer and gave recitals in Graz, Hamburg, Lausanne, Paris, and Tokyo. His many festival appearances as a recitalist include the Berliner Festwochen, the Edinburgh Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, where he worked with Philippe Jordan, Burkhard Kehring, Malcolm Martineau, and András Schiff.

Müller-Brachmann has recorded for radio and television and several labels have released CDs with him, including a Schubert recital disc as well as Bach cantatas for Naxos.

He teaches singing at the Berlin University of the Arts.
