The Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester, headed by Thomas Guggeis as Director General of Music at Frankfurt Opera since 2023–24, is one of the most important orchestras in the German-speaking world. Opernwelt has three times named it Orchestra of the Year. Previous directors have included such luminaries as Sir Georg Solti, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Michael Gielen, Sylvain Cambreling, Paolo Carignani, and Sebastian Weigle, who held the post from 2008 to 2023.
The name of the orchestra goes back to the Frankfurt Museum Society, for which it was founded towards the end of the 18th century. Since then the orchestra has appeared as a concert orchestra in the ‘museum concerts’ organised by the Museum Society.
