Michael Boder was born in 1958 and grew up in Germany. After training in Hamburg and Florence, he became chief conductor at the Basel Opera in 1987. He also visited many opera houses and concert halls, especially in Europe – including the Vienna State Opera from 1996 – before becoming music director at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in 2008. Boder was especially known for a keen affinity for twentieth-century music.
He conducted at the most prestigious theatres and concert halls worldwide, and his career took him to the Royal Danish Orchestra several times. At the Royal Danish Theatre and orchestra, Boder was conductor and artistic adviser in the period 2012–16.
He was recognized around the world and his 2012 DVD recording of Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre of the Barcelona production by La Fura dels Baus received many awards. He also received a GRAMMY nomination for Lulu.
