Ludwig Norman had an important position in the musical life of Sweden during the latter half of the 19th century. As a composer and lecturer at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music he was actively engaged in introducing new operas and orchestral works and he strongly supported his fellow composers, particularly Franz Berwald whom the musical establishment was reluctant to accept as a composer.
