Albrecht Mayer began his career in 1990 as principal oboe of the Bamberg Symphony. Two years later, he joined the Berlin Philharmonic in the same position. In parallel, he has pursued an impressive career as a soloist: he has worked with conductors like Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Simon Rattle, and François-Xavier Roth. He gave his debut at Carnegie Hall in 2007, when he appeared with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He is also a passionate chamber musician, performing regularly with musical partners like Hélène Grimaud, Thomas Quasthoff, Leif Ove Andsnes, and the late Lars Vogt. In 2006, Mayer was awarded Bamberg’s 2006 ETA-Hoffmann Prize; in 2013 he was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame, has been awarded the Bavarian Culture Prize and was a three-time recipient of the ECHO-Klassik prize. His bestselling autobiography, Klangwunder: Wie die Kraft der Musik mich geheilt hat (“The Miracle of Sound: How the Power of Music Healed Me”) was published in September 2022. He has also started the Albrecht Mayer Foundation, a project that raises funds for research and therapy of diseases of the retina and optic nerve. Albrecht Mayer plays instruments made by German makers Gebrüder Mönnig.
