Burkhard Ulrich has been an ensemble member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin since 2001, and has since become one of the world’s most sought-after character tenors. His past roles span a wide repertoire, and include Herodes (Salome), Hauptmann (Wozzeck), Captain Vere (Billy Budd), Shuiski (Boris Godunov) and Hexe (Hänsel und Gretel).

Ulrich became famous for his interpretations of the roles of Mime and Loge in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, performing in numerous cycles. He has appeared internationally, including at the festivals of Bayreuth, Salzburg and Aix-en-Provence, and in venues such as the Metropolitan Opera, New York, the Opéra national de Paris and the Bayerische Staatsoper, and at the BBC Proms in London.

He has appeared regularly under Sir Simon Rattle in operas and concerts. Other conductors with whom he has collaborated include Kirill Petrenko, Riccardo Muti, Jeffrey Tate, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Christian Thielemann. Ulrich’s numerous recordings include a variety of albums and DVDs.
