Love, jealousy, torture, murder, suicide – all packed into a tautly woven drama of passionate musical outbursts and flowing lyricism. Puccini's verismo masterpiece is a classic love triangle for a trio of stellar voices!
And what a cast the Bavarian State Opera brings together for the opening of the Munich Opera Festival! The great Finnish soprano Karita Mattila depicts the prima donna Floria Tosca with controlled intensity and simmering passion. Jonas Kaufmann, portraying her lover the artist Mario Cavaradossi, once again confirms his status as one of the most exciting tenors of our time on the international opera stage. With its many expressive refinements, his “E lucevan le stelle” is practically a miniature opera in itself. Complementing his partners as the power- and sex-obsessed Roman police chief Scarpia is Juha Uusitalo, whose velvety voice brims with dark menace.
Conductor Fabio Luisi leads his ensemble with a brio and sensitivity that never let the attention flag. Stage director Luc Bondy, has the action unfold in monumental sets and clearly centers his production on his "dream team" trio of protagonists. Underscoring the characters of the protagonists are the costumes by Academy Award winning costume designer Milena Canonero.
