Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.
St. Stephen's Basilica stands tall and majestic, extending high over the rooftops of Budapest, capital of Hungary. The towers of this magnificent church, which dates back to the 19th century, are 96 metres high, and several tons of granite support the weight of its magnificent shining dome.
Ornate paintings cover the ceilings and decorate the spacious interior, along with the designs and creative ideas of the famous Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl, which dominate the ambience of the country's second-largest church.
Hundreds of steps lead high up into the bell towers of this magnificent church, one of many sightseeing attractions in this picturesque city on the river Danube.
