Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.
The Iglesia De San Francisco and its adjacent monastery is one of the most important historic monuments in Lima, the capital of Peru. Soon after Francisco Pizarro founded Lima in 1535, Franciscan friars began to build the monastery.
The Iglesia De San Francisco, the Holy Francis of Assisi Church and the neighboring monastery, form the country's largest religious complex and date back to the colonial period.
The Iglesia De San Francisco's outstandingly beautiful façade and, most notably, its wonderful porch are unique in the whole of Peru. The decorative sculptures are reminiscent of Baroque design and are highly detailed and extremely precious.
The Franciscan monastery is surrounded by two impressive sacred buildings, the Mary's Solitude and the Church of Our Dear Lady of Miracles.
