Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

North of Laos' capital of Vientiane and on the banks of the legendary Mekong River is one of the country's most impressive historic cities, Luang Prabang.

In contrast to many other metropolises in South East Asia, the former king's residence of Luang Prabang has retained its pre-colonial appearance. A seemingly endless number of temples and monastery complexes that are of great historical significance attract hordes of visitors each day.

Thirty-five monasteries accommodate around seven hundred monks and a thousand novices; they and the city's many splendid temples highlight the deep religious faith that determines the everyday life of Luang Prabang.

The inhabitants of Laos are made up of a combination of several mountain tribes, yet despite their differences they live together in harmony and perform their centuries-old dances to the sound of traditional music, their performances filling the city streets with life.

Luang Prabang, the unique former king's residence on the banks of the legendary Mekong River, has most assuredly managed to retain its remarkable architectural, artistic and religious splendor right up to the present day.
