Global Treasures - History's Most Protected Monuments - Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

At first sight, the area around the Victoria Terminus is like one of London's typical historic squares, due to the many double-decker buses that can be seen. However, the chaotic hustle and bustle of the streets does not seem to be quite right. That is because this railway station is not in fact located in England, but in India!

The monumental building is one of the most impressive examples of Victorian Gothic architecture on the Indian subcontinent, and from the initial planning stage it took ten years to build the station that is today called Chhatrapati Shivaji.

The station's design gained much inspiration from London's St. Pancras Railway Station, which had been completed in 1868.

While for most passengers tremendous hustle and bustle tends to get in the way of any architectural appreciation of the Victoria Terminus, it is certain that for many years to come it will remain one of India's most important and fascinating railway stations.
