Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world's heritage. Join us as we explore one of these protected monuments.

Bhubaneswar boasts many magnificent buildings. The capital of the Indian province of Odisha is well known for its fine Hindu temples and for several years has been a popular destination for both tourists and pilgrims.

At one time, the ancient Bhubaneswar featured 7000 sanctuaries and was known as the Temple City of India. Five hundred temples have survived.

The highlight of the year is a special celebration when a precious illustration of Shiva is brought from the nearby Lingaraj Temple to a water pool. The ritual bathing of the main Shiva deity is accompanied by many pilgrims.

The main deity of the Vaital-Deul Temple is a frightening, eight-armed Chamunda. Historians and archaeologists believe from the images within the sanctuary that Tantra rituals and even human sacrifice once took place.

The classical temple dance of Odisha and Bhubaneswar is the Odissi. There's no doubt about it, Bhubaneswar is the perfect setting for a Hindu temple dance!
