David Robert Jones was born in Brixton, London on 8 January 1947. He lived with his parents until he was 18. During a fight over a girl, Bowie's friend George Underwood punched him in the eye. Doctors could not fully repair the damage, leaving his pupil permanently dilated. The pair remained good friends and Underwood went on to do artwork for Bowie's early albums.
At the age of 17, David Jones was interviewed on BBC television's Tonight programme as the founder of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men. Bowie appears 29th in the 2002 list of 100 Great Britons (voted for by the public), alongside such greats as Winston Churchill, John Lennon and Freddie Mercury. This video reveals for the first time ever, astonishing very early footage including the infamous groundbreaking Ziggy period, showing Bowie's uniqueness as an evolving artist throughout his long career.
