Dame Janet Baker, in one of her greatest roles, leads a cast of some of Britain's finest interpreters of Baroque opera, and their performance under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras is one of the highest musical excellence. This video is a studio recording of John Copley's acclaimed English National Opera production.
The opera was first performed in 1724 at the Haymarket Theatre in London using castrati singers in the heroes' roles. This production follows modern practice in using women in these parts. Dame Janet's virtuoso role as Julius Caesar has been heralded as a masterful recreation of the music which Handel wrote for the finest singers of his time.
Part 1
Julius Caesar
Overture
Act I
Caesar! Caesar! Egypt acclaims thee!
Kneel in tribute, fair land of Egypt
Curio, Caesar has come
Tyrant avoid my sight
Mother! - Cornelia!
Grief and woe all hope deny me
The time for tears is over
Come rouse yourselves to vengeance
You shall be Queen Cleopatra
Yet why despair?
Pharaoh, my King!
Upstart, barbarian and traitor!
Spirit of mighty Pompey
A nobly born young maiden
Here within thee
Alas! Reviled and neglected
Alas! Reviled and neglected
O star of my desire
Caesar! A generous destiny
How sielntly, how slyly
Sire, with Sextus her son
Never reject a tender lover
Mother! - My dearest!
Condemened to grieve and cry
Act II
Have you done as I ordered
Listen! - What is this?
Lamenting, complaining
Fly then, fly O my heart
Fleet o'er flowery meadow gliding
Still despairing, still lamenting
Lady, forget your grieving
Sign no more, forget lamenting
He is no son
Wounded the serpent
Soon he will come
Venus, fair lady
Ah Gods! What do I see?
In anger and fury
They have found him
Hear my prayer
Act III
Sinfonia
So! You are beaten!
I shall tame your pride
And so in one brief hour
Flow my tears
From the perils of the ocean
Nirenus, the battle is fought and lost
See in spate the high cataract storming!
Ladies, my faithful servants
Stormy winds my ship has taken
Sinfonia
Here, Curio and your legions
Dearest! - Fairest!
Long, long may Egypt
Proclaim we all great Caesar's glory!
