Professor Fried works on the sound with the student and all her indications and corrections are focused on the tools to improve the quality of sound. Each string of the violin has its own character and sound, so we have to use the bow in different ways to show the special acoustic feature of every string.
The student has to think about the sound he wants every moment. He has to focus on the beginning and the further develop. All the sounds have their order and shape. A very useful advice is to think the sound in the same way as we talk ('speak the phrase'), so we adopt the same breathing and phrasing.
Fried also corrects the position of the bow and the movement of the arm while playing, as well as the trunk gestures to avoid losing the balance. She talks about triplets, shiftings, double stops, phrasing and bow, with the common idea of being completely aware of the feelings about what we play every moment. Fried gives some explanations in relation to the performer and the musical idea.
