First remark from Geringas in this masterclass is concerning the Maestoso character: the student should think on it like a king's march, holding the tempo. He also reflects on music like a memory and musicality: the student must decide the musical development, what is important and how to build the phrases to give continuity to the music.
David Geringas makes mainly musical indications related to tempo, tension, rhythm, agogics, expression and attitude of the musician. Regarding the second theme, the character is completely different (cantabile, soft, dreamy) and it has to be prepared. The student must correct the intensity and the professor highlights the importance of vibrato to get the proper color for a certain "espressivissimo" moment. It is also important to feel how the air starts to move and vibrate, and how it is transmitted to the audience to "move" their ears or hearts. The student must find this suitable type of vibrato with bow pressure, control, movement and speed, with fingers contact, so that the resulting sound is magic.
Afterwards, they work on bow (not always sul tasto), metrics and agogics, rhythms and accents. Finally, Geringas suggest the student to be more convincing, to show clearly what he wants and taking into account the importance to keep the rhythm under control.
